Spay and Neuter Assistance
EVERYDAY IS SPAY DAY AT DANE COUNTY HUMANE!
Spaying and neutering your pets is so important that DCHS makes sure all cats, dogs, and rabbits are always spayed or neutered before they are adopted from our shelter. Altering animals already living in our community is also important to us, and we have a low-cost spay/neuter program to provide an oppourtunity for low-income pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered. Due to the high demand for our services, we have changed our policy to ensure we use our resources most effectively. As of January 1st, 2012, DCHS will require proof of financial need to qualify for any companion pet appointment. See accepted methods of proof below.

CATS
- Minimum size for surgery: 2 pounds. In general, cats reach this weight between 8-12 weeks of age.
- Must be transported in a carrier/trap. The cats will still be influenced by their anesthesia at the time you pick them up. It is required for the cat's safety that they be in a secure carrier/trap for the ride back home. If you bring more than one cat on the same day, they must travel home in individual carriers/traps. Placing two cats together in that condition is a small space is not recommended.
- Must fast before surgery. Please do not feed your cat any food after 9:00pm the night before the appointment. Please continue to have water available; just no food. If you are using food as bait to trap a cat, please use only a small amount.

DOGS
- Minimum age for surgery:
- Males: 3 months + both testicles descended
- Females: 4 months
- Must be on leash or in a carrier.
- Must fast before surgery. Please do not feed your dog any food after 9:00pm the night before their appointment. Please continue to have water available; just no food.
- Pit Bulls & Pit Bull Mixes: No additional owner requirements needed. Any Pit Bull or Pit Bull mix is welcome to use our program, regardless of the need of their owner.
APPOINTMENTS
The appointments available are limited and pre-registration is required. We are only able to schedule one calendar month at a time, and our clinics do fill up quickly. For each appointment, you bring your animal to DCHS first thing in the morning, and you pick them up that same evening. We are not able to provide transportation or overnight housing for your animal. No taxes are charged for these services/products, and payments must be made with cash or check only. Please call 608-838-0413 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Spay/Neuter Assistance Partners in Dane County
The following non-profit organizations have partnered with DCHS through Maddie's Fund Spay/Neuter Project to help end the problem of pet overpopulation in Dane County. Their generosity and dedication to spay/neuter efforts will help bring us closer to the goal of finding a caring home for every animal that comes through our doors. Both clinics also offer low-cost spay/neuter services, and both clinics operate completely independently from DCHS and each other. Please contact the groups directly for more information on their services or to set up an appointment.

SOS provides a veterinarian, a veterinary technician and all the necessary equipment to outfit and execute a spay/neuter clinic. Each participating group is required to provide a location, volunteers and patients. Assistance is available in selecting a location as well as training for volunteers.
