Dane County Humane Society's Equine & Livestock Program
While Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) has taken in horses and other livestock for many years, the program expanded in 2016 with the construction of a brand new barn. This facility allows DCHS to house farm animals onsite, whereas previously many of these animals were sent to foster homes which could create longer lenghts of stay which meant they took longer to find homes. Our new facility, combined with our livestock experienced staff, veterinarians and volunteers has made our Equine and Livestock Program extremely successful.
- Six stalls of various sizes; from 10'x12' to 12'x16'
- Dutch doors in each stall that open onto private or semi-private paddocks
- Large storage areas including tack room, feed room and hay storage
- Indoor area used for assessments, training and adopter meet and greets
- Chicken coop with outdoor runs
Interested in volunteering in our barn?
Having equine or livestock experienced volunteers in our barn is essential to our success. Volunteers assist with daily care duties (feeding, turning in/out, cleaning) as well as basic ground training using positive reinforcement, clicker training and natural horsemanship techniques. Our volunteers much be able to work in all weather conditions and able to lift up to 50 pounds. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering in our barn, please contact our volunteer department at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Looking to donate to our program?
Monetary donations directly support the life-saving work that DCHS does. From the basics such as purchasing necessary food, to covering the cost of medical care, your dollar goes a long way into helping us help animals. You can donate to DCHS HERE.
If you are interested in donating supplies for our barn residents, that is great! We are always in need of specific donations such as large amounts of horse hay, wood shavings and other daily care supplies. Contact Betsy at email@example.com to learn about what items we need most.
