ALL DAY

DCHS's Main Shelter and Thrift Stores are closed for the 4th of July Holiday.

Dane County Humane Society's Wildlife Center will be open regular hours. If you find a wild animal in need of assistance, please call (608) 287-3235 before intervening. New patient admissions are by appointment only. Learn what to do if you find a wild animal in need of assistance.

Holiday celebrations can be a scary and stressful experience for some pets. Click here to learn how you can keep your pets safe and secure, and what steps to take should your pet run off and become lost.

If you find a lost pet this weekend, particularly while DCHS is closed for the holiday, don’t panic. There’s a lot you can do to help. These steps are always the best first move:

  • Check for tags and call or text any numbers.
  • Walk the pet in the area to see if anyone recognizes them.
  • Have them scanned for a microchip at a local vet or police station.
  • Post on Petco Love Lost, PawBoost, PetFBI.org, and community pages like Nextdoor or Facebook.
  • If safe, keep the animal at your home as its often the quickest way to reunite them with their family!
  • File a Found Pet Report with DCHS on our website.

If you can’t safely contain the animal, try to confine them and call Dane County dispatch at (608) 255-2345 for guidance or to see if an Animal Services Officer can help.
