Baby Steps Lead Fritz Home

SHARE:

Because of YOU, Fritz got the support he needed to heal and come out of his shell.

He was confused, scared, and unsure of who to trust. His eyes told a story of fear and uncertainty. Fritz had already experienced so much trauma in his life. The dedicated team at Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) knew he needed more than just food and shelter. He also needed help to recover and heal from his emotional scars.

When Fritz arrived at DCHS in July with many other dogs that were removed from a chaotic home by Animal Services, he kept to himself, retreating to the farthest corners of his kennel. His first few days were filled with confusion as he navigated this new environment that still felt strange and uncertain to him. While authorities investigated the neglect Fritz and the other dogs had endured, we would house him safely and begin his path to healing.

Staff members noted that Fritz seemed conflicted—curious, but too frightened to approach them. Despite his hesitation, there was a spark of hope in his eyes that we would work hard to ignite. No challenge was too great, no progress too small. We knew that Fritz’s healing would be a journey, and we were committed to supporting him every step of the way.

With your support today, we can continue to meet the individual needs of more animals like Fritz. If you give by December 31, 2025, you can double your impact for the animals in our community up to $40,000 thanks to the generosity of the Don and Marilyn Anderson Foundation.

We started with simple acts of kindness. When Fritz hesitated to walk over the metal grates in his kennel, staff quickly covered them with towels to make him feel safe. Every small victory—a step forward, a tail twitch—was celebrated.

With patience, treats, and gentle encouragement, Fritz began to let his guard down. And when Fritz finally reached out to take a treat from a staff member’s hand, it was a moment of joy that felt like the beginning of a new chapter for him.

Eventually, Fritz’s previous family officially surrendered him, allowing us to move forward with finding him a new home. While helping him heal emotionally, Fritz’s medical needs were also addressed with expert care and compassion. It became clear that his teeth had been causing him discomfort for quite some time. Our skilled veterinary team was able to provide him with relief thanks to our on-site dental suite. Just days after his procedure, he was ready for adoption.

Then, the right person came along. Fritz’s adopter, Izzy, had always dreamed of welcoming a dog into her life. She understood that Fritz’s past would require patience. But when Fritz met Izzy, something magical happened. He immediately started running around, his fear melting away for a moment of pure joy. He jumped into her lap and snuggled, as if to say “I’ve been waiting for you.”

Fritz relaxes in the grass

Today, Fritz is living the life he deserves. Izzy says he “adores going for hikes, long walks, and getting the zoomies. He is learning how to play like a puppy again, and he’s started trying to fetch toys!” Without teeth, his tongue often sticks out of his mouth, especially when he sleeps on his back, which Izzy says he loves to do.

Fritz has also become a social butterfly, enjoying playtime at the dog park and showing his affectionate side as he curls up next to his family. Izzy shares, “When I do homework, you can guarantee he will jump on my lap and rest his head on my desk while I work.” Even after his long journey, Fritz’s story is proof of the incredible power of love, patience, and community.

At DCHS, it’s not just about providing shelter. It’s about giving animals like Fritz the care they need, both emotionally and physically. It’s about ensuring that every animal feels loved and cared for while working within our community to provide important resources for people and animals alike. Your support makes transformations like Fritz’s possible. With your help, more animals can find healing and hope.

Fritz’s story is one of many that shows the impact of a caring community. Every donation helps DCHS continue to provide love and care to animals like Fritz, and your support ensures that every animal has the chance to heal, grow, and find their own happy new beginning. With your help we can give more animals like Fritz the chance they deserve.

You can DOUBLE your impact for animals in need by giving before December 31st, 2025!
