Helloooo! My name is Sugar, and once I feel safe and settled, I absolutely live up to my name. I can take a little time to warm up to new places and new people, but give me a moment and you'll see my soft, affectionate side come shining through.
My story started a little rough. I was found living outdoors with my sister, learning how to survive on my own alongside a creek in Texas. Because of that, I can be a bit cautious at first, but I've come a long way and am learning that the world isn't such a scary place anymore.
These days, my ideal afternoon looks a lot less "survival mode" and a lot more "picnic blanket and pets." I love stretching out in the grass, rolling around, and soaking up attention from my favorite people. I'm gentle, sweet, and will happily lean in for more love-sometimes even reaching out to keep the pets coming.
I'm a nice walking buddy and enjoy getting out to explore at my own pace. New things can still surprise me (honking geese were...a lot), so I'm looking for a home that will help me build confidence and take things slow when I need it. I ride great in the car and settle in nicely once I'm comfortable.
I'm also a smart girl! I already know cues like sit, stay, shake, and down, and I'm very food-motivated-which means I'm eager and ready to keep learning with you.
I've lived with other dogs before and would really benefit from having a confident dog friend in my new home to help show me the ropes. I've also been around cats-if they run, I might think it's a game, but I've never shown any aggression.
One thing to know about me: I can be a little protective of my favorite toys, food, or cozy spaces when other dogs are around. I do great with people, though-no worries there. With some thoughtful management and continued training, I'll keep improving.
I'm house-trained, kennel-trained, and happiest when I'm close to my people. More than anything, I just want to feel safe, loved, and understood.
If you're looking for a gentle, resilient girl who just needs a little patience to blossom into the sweetest companion, I might be your Sugar
