DCHS: After Dark
DCHS: After Dark will be held once a month and will offer a different theme and activities each session. Each event will feature time with our classroom animals, and various animal-related activities, lessons or crafts!
Upcoming After Dark Dates & Themes:
- Friday, May 8th - Paws for the Planet - Join us for an eco-inspired evening of activities that explore how caring for the Earth helps animals thrive. Through hands-on fun and animal encounters, we’ll learn simple ways to protect habitats, reduce waste, and make the world a safer place for pets and wildlife alike.
- Friday, May 15th - Python Palooza - Get excited to celebrate snakes with special guest Key Reptiles and their ball pythons! Participants will get to learn about what makes snakes special, and get to hold and interact with pythons!
- Friday, June 26th - Ocean Explorers - Calling all deep-sea adventurers! Grab your curiosity and dive into a splash-tastic After Dark adventure as we explore the incredible world of ocean animals. Kids will discover the wonders waiting beneath the waves!
- Friday, July 17th - Summer Safari - Pack your binoculars and lace up your explorer boots, it’s time for a Summer Safari! We’ll journey across grasslands, jungles, and savannas to discover amazing animals from around the world. Experience the thrill of the safari at DCHS!
- Friday, August 14th - Rainforest Rangers - Become a Rainforest Ranger and uncover the secrets of one of the most vibrant ecosystems on Earth! Venture into a world bursting with color, sound, and life as we discover why rainforests are so important to our planet. Adventure awaits beneath the canopy!
After Dark runs from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
Details:
We ask that participants bring their own snack or dinner as these events will be held during dinner time hours. We will set aside time for eating during the event.
While participants will be able to pet our classroom animals and occasional guest speakers, they won't be able to pet our adoptable dogs and cats.

Allergy Information: DCHS utilizes peanut butter for animal enrichment throughout the shelter, and therefore is unable to provide a peanut-free facility. We are unable to make accommodations for children with severe peanut allergies.

Cancellation Policy
Refunds may be granted up to 24 hours after payment has been submitted, less a $5.00 administration fee, if requested in writing to the Humane Educator at [email protected]. After 24 hours from payment submission, fees are non-refundable but the event reservation may be transferred to another date in some situations. Dane County Humane Society reserves the right to cancel events due to various circumstances.
Allergy Information
DCHS utilizes peanut butter for animal enrichment throughout the shelter and, therefore, is unable to provide a peanut-free facility. We are unable to make accommodations for children with severe peanut allergies. DCHS also uses various forms of hay throughout the shelter, which may come into contact with some of our education animals. Additionally, if any participants have a shellfish allergy, please alert a DCHS staff member prior to your visit so we can take appropriate precautions.
Inclement Weather Policy
If weather-related issues require DCHS to close, updates will be posted on our website, Instagram, and Facebook pages. Please check these platforms during severe winter conditions. A staff member will contact you directly by email about any cancellations and help with next steps.
